Below are some frequently asked questions to help you understand the what and why of the 2025 Martin County Comprehensive Plan.
What is a Comprehensive Plan?
A Comprehensive Plan is a long-range guiding document that outlines a community’s vision for future growth, development, conservation, and quality of life. It provides a framework for making decisions about a variety of topics including:
- Housing
- Economic Development
- Transportation
- Land Use
- Infrastructure
- Public Services
- Recreation
Why is Martin County Updating Their Plan?
Martin County’s existing Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2009, nearly 16 years ago, meaning an update is needed to plan for the next 10-20 years. Updating the plan ensures that:
- The County is prepared for future growth and economic opportunities, including leveraging assets like WestGate@Crane and I-69.
- Funding opportunities from the state and federal programs to encourage economic growth and repair roadways.
- Land use, transportation, housing, and public services align with current needs of the County.
What Does the Comprehensive Plan Cover?
The plan address key topics including:
- Growth, Housing, and Conservation
- Transportation and Connectivity
- Economic Development, Education, and Jobs
- Health and Recreation
- Infrastructure and Energy
- Hazard Mitigation and Resilience
- Historic Preservation
- Implementation and Funding Strategies
How Has the Community Been Involved?
The plan relies on community engagement and feedback to develop a vision and goals to work toward. Public engagement has happened through several key areas:
- Steering Committee Meetings - Comprised of 12 Community Members.
- Public Workshop: The first workshop was hosted on March 31st. The second event will take place in June!
- Public Survey - The public survey was open from February to April and collected 355 responses.
- Stakeholder Interviews - Four stakeholder sessions were held on February 23rd covering the following topics: Revitalization and Quality of Life, Economic Development, Housing, and Infrastructure and Public Services
What Happens After the Plan is Adopted?
Once adopted, the plan will:
- Provide a Vision for Community Members and Leaders to Work Towards Achieving.
- Guide County and Town Decision Making on Future Development and Resources Allocation.
- Help Guide Development Where It's Most Needed or Best Supported Within the County
- Supports Zoning or Ordinance Changes to Ensure Development and Visual Appearance Remains In Line With County Desires.
How Can I Stay Involved?
Even though we’re nearly halfway through the process, there’s still time to provide your input. Here are some ways you can stay involved:
- Attend the public workshop event in June.
- Follow updates from the Martin County Alliance, Redevelopment Commission, and county officials.
- Share ideas or concerns with local leaders.
